Healthy Yoga positions

Yoga is a great form of exercise that connects your mind and body but it has been evolving for centuries and todays modern lifestyles have not prepared your body for this form of musculoskeletal exercise.

Yoga must be slowly and methodically worked into your life, not just jumping into a yoga class every once in a while. Here you will find some of the most basic and healthy yoga positions that can start you on your journey.

Yoga Tree: the most basic and yet one of the most important for the aging body. images-1

Stand next to a chair, table or counter (something stable)

While holding on slowly place one foot onto the knee of the opposite leg.

Try and position the foot so that the heel is slightly above the knee and your toes wrap below the knee

Slowly raise the arm that is not holding onto the stabilizing surface above your head as in pic to right

Once you have found your balance, slowly let go of surface and join hands together above your head

Hold for 10 to 30 seconds and repeat on the other side, repeat 2 or 3 times each leg

When it can go no further back, slowly tilt your torso forward reaching for the surface

Gently touch the surface in front of you for balance as you try and straighten leg out
